Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

Saturday text in my understanding implies informality even in such important topics as the announcement of the new Galaxy Tab S5e tablet.

Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

So, Samsung is fueling interest in the upcoming Free classifieds in Mbulu announcement of the Galaxy S10 in many different ways. A day before the announcement of the tablet, a letter fell to the mail: “We invite you to the online premiere of a new device in the brand’s mobile product line.” I ask Samsung: “So what are you going to show?”. In response: “I won’t tell!”.

At the appointed time I went to the site, but it was empty. Even in the book “Alice in Wonderland” there were inscriptions “Drink me”, “Bite me” on the objects, but there is nothing at all, only a stub hangs:

Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

I clicked on it (because I have an inquisitive mind), and the video immediately started:

In the video, Hassan and Safwan (one is Samsung's director of product marketing and the other is a UK tech blogger) travel to Toronto, Canada to spend the day with the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e.

The video is funny. Tech blogger Safwan arrives, holding a tablet in his hands, and complains that Canada is brutally cold like he has never experienced before. And the tablet has a good screen, powerful brightness, it can be seen that it is only minus six degrees outside, so any attentive, but not thoughtful viewer would suspect the blogger of fraud, but not the Mobile-Review.com resource. We know that in Canada and the USA the temperature is measured in Fahrenheit. And converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius is very easy. Remember! It is necessary to subtract 32 from the temperature, then divide by 2 and throw 10% on top: (-6-32) / 2 * 1.1 \u003d -21 degrees Celsius. And if you consider the information about the tablet unnecessary, then at least learn how to correctly translate degrees.

Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

And immediately after the video, an official press release came to the mail, which impressed me most of all with its technical characteristics. Let's go to them and move on.

Screen

So I guess most of you are aware that WQXGA is 2560 × 1600 pixels. Judging by the characteristics, I would venture to suggest that the screen is exactly the same as on the Galaxy Tab S4. However, the frames of the new tablet have become a little narrower, as the ratio of the screen area to the total size of the front panel has changed. If earlier it was 78%, now it is 82%. The brightness should essentially be the same as the Tab S4 and reach 600 nits in auto mode.

Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

In the video, of course, the screen was praised a lot. Under the direct rays of the sun, they looked at photos and answered messages. There are no questions or complaints about the screen as a whole. This is one of the best screens on the market if you like SuperAMOLED technology with its gorgeous vibrant and rich colors.

The reverse side of the tablet is made of aluminum.

Performance

However, I think you, like me, were most impressed by the fact that instead of a chipset model, it says "64-bit octa-core processor." This is usually done when the device has some kind of catch a la MediaTek or Spreadtrum. Probably, when the PR service sends such a press release to journalists from the technosphere, they think: “Oh, how smart and cunning we are! No one will ever guess to see what kind of chipset it is.” Well, in general, they are not far from the truth. For example, Mail.Ru did not guess.

And there is a Qualcomm chipset in the tablet, which, most likely, you have not seen before - Snapdragon 670. The 670th is like Snapdragon 710, but a little worse. Let's try to figure out why, in a device that Dong Jin Koh (DJ Koh), president and head of IT and Mobile Communications division of Samsung Electronics, in a press release called "a flagship device with a concise design and powerful hardware, available at a new price category", this chipset is installed.

Firstly, probably, it was necessary to clarify that we are talking about the flagship in the mid-price segment, then the questions would immediately disappear, why not the 845th chipset or similar Exynos.

Both the 710 and 670 chipsets are made using 10 nm technology. They have the same cores, but on the 670 they are locked at 2.0 GHz, while on the 710 it is 2.2 GHz. The graphics of the 710 is slightly more powerful: Adreno 616 versus Adreno 615. The difference of one figure, judging by the tests, looks like this:

Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

Also, the 710 has a faster X15 LTE modem (up to 800 Mbps), and the 670 (up to 600 Mbps) does not care in this case, since initially the tablet will be supplied only in the Wi-Fi version, although in the video using a tablet with a SIM card inserted.

Samsung unexpectedly introduced a new tablet

Also, the 710th can hold a more powerful camera (up to 32 MP), which, again, is absolutely unimportant in the case of a tablet.

In the last article I already wrote that rationality is one of the main principles of Samsung. And in this case, Snapdragon 670 is a fully justified choice in terms of production costs, as no user will feel the difference.

  • Tab S5e has DeX mode and keyboard connectors. In theory, Tab S4 keyboards should fit, since the difference in length and width is only 0.4 mm
  • The tablet has a new Bixby 2.0 that can control gadgets in a smart home. I wonder if it will be possible to turn it off?
  • When purchased as a gift, they promise 4 months of YouTube Premium.
  • Tab S4 was covered with Gorilla Glass 5, version of the protective glass in the new tablet is unknown
  • Tab S5e will be available in Russia from April 2019

Conclusion and competitors

Samsung's new tablet aims to fill a gap. The company already has a premium device - the Tab S4, an entry-level solution - the Galaxy Tab A, which comes in a Wi-Fi only version, and now there is a device in the middle price segment - the Tab 5Se.

Assuming you don't need a stylus, the new 5Se is the best device in the lineup. The Tab A powered by a Snapdragon 450 and with a Full HD (1200 x 1920) screen is a little too low-powered and boring, the Tab S4 is more aimed at professional users who will use all the features of the device, including a high-quality stylus. But the 5se is great as a device for creating and consuming content both at home and, thanks to its low weight and long battery life, on the road.

The price in dollars is 26.5 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate (excluding taxes). But considering that the official price tag of Tab A is 24,990 rubles, we can expect prices at the level of 30-35 thousand rubles for Wi-Fi and LTE.

I think the main competitor of this tablet is the 2018 iPad. On the official Apple website, its price for 32 GB is 25.5 thousand rubles for the Wi-Fi version and 35,583 rubles for LTE. The iPad has a screen that's almost an inch smaller, but you can buy a stylus to go with it. We can talk about competition when prices become known. If Samsung can put a price tag of 30 thousand for Wi-Fi and 35 for LTE, that is, on a par with the iPad, then the 5Se will look like a better buy, provided that the operating system is not fundamental to the buyer.

Samsung's device turned out to be interesting and worthy. Write your opinion in the comments.

Cameras

The main camera is 13 MP and the front camera is 8 MP. The main camera can shoot in 4K 30 frames per second. I believe that the cameras are exactly the same as in the Galaxy Tab S4. More details can be found here. Let me remind you that the quality is quite good, and the main complaint about the camera was the lack of any kind of stabilization.

Other interesting things

  • The tablet has a fingerprint scanner. It's built into the power button. The Tab S4 had an iris scanner. But in 5Se, it seems that it is not, but there is a face recognition system.
  • Tab S4 sound from AKG - 4 powerful speakers.
  • The tablet has a microSD slot up to 512 GB. This is a typical slot that requires a paperclip to open, so I was very impressed how the guys from the video in the cold opened it with their bare hands and inserted a card
  • Apparently, the new tablet is not designed to work with a stylus at all.
  • The battery life is up to 14.5 hours of the screen. The battery is 300mAh smaller than the Tab S4. Exactly 7000 mAh, but the time is an hour longer due to the less powerful chipset.
  • If you believe the video, then for half a day of work in the cold at minus 21 degrees, the tablet was discharged by 38%. In general, working in such a frost generally characterizes the device from the right side.
  • For some reason, Samsung is chasing the thickness of the device. In the video, it was mentioned several times that the thickness is only 5.5 mm (7.1 for the Tab S4). It's probably cool, but not essential.
  • But the weight of the device, on the contrary, commands respect - only 400 grams (483 g for the Tab S4).
  • The tablet has a new proprietary interface ONE UI. The video briefly showed a couple of screens. I really want to know more, because it looks much nicer than on smartphones
  • Tab S5e has DeX mode and keyboard connectors. In theory, Tab S4 keyboards should fit, as the difference in length and width is only 0.4 mm

Let's try to figure out why the device, which Dong Jin Koh (DJ Koh), president and head of IT and Mobile Communications division of Samsung Electronics, in a press release called "a flagship device with a concise design and powerful hardware, available at a new price category", this chipset is installed.

Firstly, probably, it was necessary to clarify that we are talking about the flagship in the mainstream segment, then the questions would immediately disappear why not the 845th chipset or a similar Exynos.

Also, the 710 has a faster X15 LTE modem (up to 800 Mbps), and the 670 (up to 600 Mbps) does not care in this case, since initially the tablet will be supplied only in the Wi-Fi version, although in the video using a tablet with a SIM card inserted.

But 5Se doesn't seem to have it, but it does have a face recognition system.
  • If you believe the video, then for half a day of work in the cold at minus 21 degrees, the tablet was discharged by 38%.In general, working in such a frost generally characterizes the device from the right side.
  • The tablet has a new Bixby 2.0 that can control gadgets in a smart home. I wonder if it will be possible to turn it off?
  • Gives 4 months of YouTube Premium when purchased as a gift.
  • Tab S4 was covered with Gorilla Glass 5, the version of the protective glass in the new tablet is unknown
