Results of July

These are months of relative calm in the mobile industry. The middle of summer has a calming effect not only on South African crocodiles (for them, July is just the middle of winter). Cold-blooded reptiles become as passive as possible, conserve strength, are forced to fast and lose weight. The "Events and Technologies" section seems to have become like them, which cannot be said about the "News". They themselves and the rumors associated with them have accumulated fairly. Let's start small.

Events and technologies

A week and a half ago, Ericsson (without Sony, which is unusual) entered into an agreement with Texas Instruments (TI) on cooperation in the development of a 3G platform for Open OS devices. These include Windows Mobile, Linux, Symbian derivatives: Nokia S60 and UIQ. The goal is to form a portfolio and offer it to breeders, as usual, to shorten the production cycle. Solutions should benefit from the application of the IOT (Interoperability Testing) program. This procedure was developed by Ericsson engineers to test the interoperability of mobile terminals. The experience of creating HSPA equipment by the company and participation in the LTE (Long Term Evolution) project, designed to ensure the transition of communication systems from the third generation to the fourth, can also play a positive role.

It is unlikely that much should be expected from this union in the near future. As a rule, joint efforts really create a reference design that is used in the products of one of the members of the alliance. The selection of Ericsson TI as a partner has directed my thoughts towards Sony Ericsson's P3 communicator, whose announcement is expected by some in October-November. According to preliminary information, the P3 will look like the P990, only thinner, it will get a 2.8-inch VGA display, support for HSDPA/HSUPA, GPS, Wi-Fi, a 5-megapixel camera (probably with autofocus). The amount of RAM will be 128 MB, the clock frequency of the processor is 332 MHz. TI's OMAP 2420 processors installed in Nokia handsets have exactly the same clock speed, which causes some suspicion. So far, Sony Ericsson smartphones have been based on Philips Nexperia chips, but there seems to be no powerful enough among them. Searching for processors from other breeders shows that the most suitable candidate is the OMAP 2420 or a related model. In this case, there is a chance to get a Sony Ericsson phone suitable for VGA resolution video recording. There are few facts, you should not trust the forecast, however, if it comes true, remember who made it.

Now about the technique less mythical, but just as little available to the inhabitants of Russia. In the first weeks of operation by the citizens of the united Europe of the Toshiba G900, the tendency of the unit to "go into the astral plane" was discovered. Turning off the screen often led to the fact that the car lost interest in what was happening around - it simply did not turn on. The only real trick was to keep the G900 awake. The example of Elm Street children demonstrates the futility of such attempts. Imbued with compassion for their customers, Toshiba quickly wrote a patch that corrects the behavior of the communicator.

At about the same time, it became known about the trouble that befell a couple of iPhone owners. Noticing that the unit had lost its former agility, they rebooted it. The result was a transition to single-user mode, similar in appearance to a Unix system without a graphical shell. A hard reset resulted in the restoration of functionality and the loss of data by Jojoba Oils in Nigeria (not the best argument in favor of eliminating removable media in portable electronics). However, these are isolated cases, no other complaints of this kind have been received.

Motorola and Microvision contributed to the technology section. The latter contracted to build tiny projectors into the mobile terminals of the former. The PicoP prototype with a resolution of 854x480 pixels and laser illumination, shown by Microvision in May at the Society of Information Display Conference, will be taken as a basis. In addition, Microvision plans to start self-selling its miniature products next year, priced at $300 to connect to a phone. The video below will give you an idea of the subject.

News

The most remarkable in July were rumors and official information about future devices. Samsung is the record holder. The information that the SGH-i620 smartphone based on Windows Mobile 6 Standard will be distributed in Europe by Vodafone has been confirmed. The Expansys website promises to start implementing the model on August 22nd. Nothing is known about the prospects of the pipe on the Russian market, but the parameters ... Yes, that's what I thought about. Isn't it time to move on to their tabular or list display? I hope this will meet with understanding from the public.

  • Wireless interfaces: GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz), WCDMA/HSDPA, IEEE 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0
  • Dimensions - 94.9x59.3x15.9 mm, weight - 105 g
  • Cameras: VGA - for video telephony and 2MP
  • Memory: 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, Micro SD slot
  • Screen - 320x240 pixels

A very close relative, judging by appearance and characteristics, is the i620 Samsung SGH-i570. It is easy to assume that they are based on the same platform, since all of their metrics are almost exactly the same. Nevertheless, if I'm not mistaken, the Korean company keeps a separate hardware system for Windows Mobile and Symbian electronics. And the SGH-i570 works just on the S60 3rd Edition software.

Another smartphone on the S60 3rd Edition, also from Samsung, attracted attention last month. It is called SGH-i550. Undoubtedly, today it is the company's most versatile phone, although the availability of Wi-Fi is questionable. The dossier on the i570 is something like this:

  • Interfaces: WCDMA/HSDPA, GPS, FM radio
  • Cameras: for video telephony and 3.2 MP with autofocus mechanism
  • Memory: 128MB RAM, 150MB ROM, Micro SD slot
  • Screen - 320x240 pixels, 2.6 inches

The Samsung SGH-P520 bar marked the beginning of the company's class of Apple iPhone- and LG Prada-like mobile terminals. Moreover, it even slightly surpasses them in terms of equipment.

  • Wireless interfaces: GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz), Bluetooth 2.0, IEEE 802.11 b/g, FM radio
  • Dimensions - 88x54x8.9 mm, weight - 102 g
  • Camera - 3MP
  • Memory: ROM - 50 MB, Micro SD slot
  • Screen - 320x240 pixels, 2.6 inches, touchscreen

The photo leader of the company was also presented, his name is Samsung SGH-G600. Like it's the thinnest phone ever (14.9mm) with a 5MP camera. The SGH-G600 does not have other features that distinguish it from the general background, however, and this is enough.

  • Wireless interfaces: GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio
  • Camera - 5 MP with autofocus
  • Memory: ROM - 40 MB, Micro SD slot
  • Screen - 320x240 pixels

PalmOne engineers also decided to abandon the keyboard in some devices. According to rumors, supported by two shots, Treo 900p will be like this.

  • Wireless interfaces: GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, IEEE 802.11 b/g
  • Dimensions - 100.9x58.2x10.5 mm, weight - 105 g
  • Camera - 2MP
  • Operating system - Palm OS Garnet 5.5.1
  • Memory: ROM - 4 GB, SD/MMC/SDIO slot
  • Intel processor, 512 MHz
  • Screen - 320x480 pixels, image rotation is supported

Remaining committed to the release of communicators with a digital keypad, Asustek is probably preparing to release (in October?) the Asus P750 unit. It's similar to its two keyboard predecessors, it's an improvement on both of them.

  • GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSDPA, IEEE 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth, GPS, FM radio
  • Camera - 3.2 MP with auto focus mechanism
  • Software platform - Windows Mobile 6 Professional
  • Memory: RAM - 128 MB, ROM - 256 GB
  • Processor Marvell PXA 27x, 512 MHz
  • Screen - 320x240 pixels

There were a lot of other new products and preliminary information about them in July (Motorola Macro, HTC Omni, Samsung SGH-P260, etc.), but I don't have the patience to talk about them. Since you are reading this, it means that you have the Internet and you will be able to find everything yourself.

Operators

In July, at Mobile-review, MegaFon's accounting of the geography of calls was quite actively discussed. Firstly, the operator introduced the tariff option "Geography of communication" for owners of the "Challenge" tariff plan. By connecting it, for example, via USSD request *147*77# and specifying a city or country, the subscriber will receive a 30% discount on calls to the specified destinations. For using the "City of Call" they charge 70 rubles, "Country of Call" - 150 rubles. monthly.

Secondly, the "Podmoskovny" package, intended for residents of the region who spend most of their time in their native lands, went on sale. Subject to this condition, their costs for calls within the network will be 1 ruble per minute and 3 rubles for an outside call. When moving inside the Moscow Ring Road, prices will increase to 2 and 5 rubles, respectively.

Beeline provided Sheremetyevo-2, Pulkovo-1,2, Strigino, Ufa, Kazan, Volgograd, Balandino and Bolshoye Savino airports with Wi-Fi coverage. And he determined the amount of fees for using it - 4.05 rubles / min. On the other hand, he disinterestedly improved the “Call Me Back” service, whose users can now access a subscriber of any Russian cellular provider.

On July 10, MTS subscribers of the Central region opened similar opportunities, with the only difference that they are free to send a request only to MTS, Megafon and Beeline users.

In July, MTS began integrating Dagtelecom into its network. This resulted in a reduction in the cost of calls to Dagtelecom numbers. From August 3rd, the territory subordinated to Dagtelecom will enter the MTS intranet roaming zone.

If you have not followed the link given in connection with the mention of the megaphone geography of communication, I inform you that in the same material you will find a story about bonuses granted by MTS to new subscribers. In addition, do not neglect the publication dedicated to the MTT virtual card: I think some people will really be able to save some money on this.
