Nokia N90 2-megapixel camera features
Unlike other N-series models, the N90 uses Carl Zeiss glass optics. This characteristic is described by the company as a significant advantage of the N90 over all other models on the market, including their own developments. Given the small size of the module with the camera, it is impossible to talk about the high-quality implementation of optics, even if it is not at the level of digital cameras. The device remains a phone with camera functions, but not vice versa. Comparison of pictures taken by N90 and, for example, N70 in the same conditions shows a slight advantage of N90, the photos are clearer, sharply outlined in small details. How far this is achieved through optics is difficult to judge. To a large extent, the use of the name Carl Zeiss, which is well known for its quality lenses and optics, is an example of co-branding. By marketing technique, the company achieves the greatest attention to its product and here it acts with verified accuracy. At the moment, there are not many models with a 2-megapixel camera available on the market, so it was a logical decision to compare the capabilities of the N90 with those of the Sony Ericsson K750. Once again, I would like to emphasize that the devices, except for the camera, have little in common, they belong to different price segments, product classes, and their comparison is incorrect (of course, if the difference of a couple of hundred Euros is not important for you). I propose to close the topic of comparing the Sony Ericsson K750 and Nokia N90 once and for all, they are too different, focused on different market segments.
Camera modes. When closed, you can rotate the camera unit away from you, it will be perpendicular to the plane of the clamshell Braid Wigs in Nigeria. The camera is activated automatically, the viewfinder appears on the external screen located at your side, the ability to quickly change settings. For this purpose, a joystick is used on the side surface, it is inconvenient that it is moved to the left, closer to the camera module, it is difficult to operate with one hand. You can shoot with the key located next to the joystick, everything is extremely simple and clear. The resulting image can be seen right there on the screen. In the described mode of operation, the video recording function is not available, only photographing.
The second mode of operation involves working with an internal screen, the picture quality on it is much higher, it is more comfortable to use it. Open the top of the clamshell and rotate the screen. It can be at an even angle to the body or with a slight slope, similar to video cameras. The last option is interesting, when you hold the device below eye level, the picture is displayed in a more convenient way. At this moment, the external screen is working, it displays a picture with the image of the camera, the screen does not turn off.
The time to start the camera when the module is moved to the working position or the half is turned is approximately 1-2 seconds, this time is spent on activating the viewfinder.
To the left of the screen there are two keys, they serve to select menu items (one of them is Gallery, its presence here is not very clear), and to configure various parameters. It is curious that the joystick is responsible for calling up the menu, but here is the way out of it after selecting an item using only the left keys. Such separation of controls is not always convenient and does not allow you to quickly change settings, although it does not play any role when shooting in automatic mode.
An advantage of the swivel screen is the fact that the phone is ideal for spy shooting. Despite the size of the phone, the rotary module allows you to easily change the viewing angle, for example, point the camera at the ceiling, at the floor, under the table, and wherever you want. People around don't perceive Nokia N90 as a camera. It seems to them that you are viewing your messages, and at this moment you can easily shoot videos, take photos. Curiously, the shutter sound in the phone is turned off, that is, you become inaudible.
Controls, interface, autofocus
The shutter button is relatively tight, but in flip-screen camera mode, it's comfortable to use, and the phone fits comfortably in one hand. The presence of autofocus requires two modes of operation of the shutter button, in particular, a short press with no maximum effort means focusing on the object, finishing the movement to the end of photographing. The button is tight and for women it was a certain problem to work with the device. Its weight affects it, it is not very convenient for them to take pictures with one hand. For most men, there is no such problem, everything is quite simple.
Focusing is provided only on the center point, it is indicated by brackets on the screen. Successful focusing on the subject is indicated by turning the bracket green. Focusing time is from one to two seconds depending on the surrounding conditions. The device is not able to focus on monochromatic objects that fill the central field. For example, if you try to take a picture of a white building with a piece of paper lying on a table, it is highly likely that autofocus will not work. The main problems are caused by white and black colors, the device is able to focus better on tint palettes.
An interesting focusing effect is observed when shooting at short distances (up to 5 centimeters), here in automatic mode the camera switches to macro photography. So, in macro mode, focusing can occur not only at the center point. The mode was discovered quite by accident and shows that the company is working on the issue of focusing the camera on several points, we can clearly say that we will not see its implementation in this model, this is a reserve for the future. A commercial sample confirmed this assumption. In the example photos, you can see that in one case the focus was on the background, in the second on a bottle of mineral water. In both cases, the device was at the same distance and aimed at the same part of the bottle.
The specifications of the lens are as follows, aperture is f/2.9, focal length is 5.5mm. The range in which autofocus is guaranteed to work is from 10 centimeters to infinity. In macro mode, however, the camera shows excellent results at distances up to 2 centimeters.
For the first time, the company has focused on the development of the camera interface, it is made at the level of the best models. Firstly, the interface has become horizontal for the flip screen mode, and secondly, the number of settings has increased dramatically, which were not available on previous models with 1.3 megapixel cameras. However, the same applies to the Nokia N70. If you remember, in the pre-sale sample, we noted the extreme slowness of the camera settings menu. And so, in a commercial product it is completely corrected. The speed of access to the menu and navigation through it are at the proper level, at the level of working with the main interface.

Scene - settings for the shooting scene, by default the automatic mode is activated, which works well, its manual adjustment is not required. But for those who consider themselves a sophisticated photographer, there is an opportunity to choose a shooting mode - Close-Up Mode, Portrait, Landscape, User Defined, Sport, Night. The number of settings is quite comparable with digital devices; in the world of mobile phones, only Sony Ericsson S700, K750 have similar settings.
Flash - the flash can work in automatic mode, or with red-eye reduction, you can also simply turn the flash on or off. The manufacturer indicates that the effective distance of the flash is 1.5 meters. In our case, optimal results were achieved when shooting at a distance of about 1 meter. At a closer distance, the frame is overexposed. In general, the flash is too weak for the capabilities of the CMOS sensor, the latter pulls out pictures in low light conditions, they look better than similar ones, but taken using the camera.
White balance - The default white balance is determined automatically. Additionally, several modes are available - Sunny, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Tungsten. The advantage of the interface is the fact that part of the image is always visible, and you can immediately see how the viewfinder image changes depending on the selected mode.
Exposure value – exposure value, set from -2 to +2, stroke is 0.1. The changes you make are also immediately visible on the viewfinder picture.
Color Tone - the number of color modes is not very large, in addition to the usual color, these are black and white, Negative, Sepia. Considering that in the editor you can convert the original image to suit your needs, there is no need to use these effects.
Among the photo settings are the following:
Selection of image resolution - 1600x1200 pixels, 800x600 and 640x480. The largest resolution has received the sonorous name Print.
Shooting option - normal, series of shots, timer.
During shooting, moving the joystick activates the zoom, it is digital up to x20. An example of the zoom function can be seen here, ZIP archive, 282 Kb. It makes no sense to use zoom, since in the built-in editor you can enlarge a regular picture in playback mode, and its quality will be higher.
The exposure was changed from +2 to -2, and on the phone screen, pictures with a longer shutter speed look extremely interesting, turning into a kind of art. Examples of the exposition in one archive, ZIP, 2.7 Mb.

The device is preloaded with a number of images that were taken by it for the presentation in Amsterdam. In any case, the company assures that the pictures have not been edited in any way. We present these pictures in one block, they look great, but we failed to achieve the same quality in real conditions on any of the devices. Moreover, during the presentation, many tried to repeat shooting the same objects, but the result was much worse than the presented photos.
Let's start the presentation of the camera's capabilities with a series of shots taken from a car in cloudy, rainy weather. In all cases, photos in maximum resolution and quality. If there is a comparison with the Sony Ericsson K750i, then autofocus was performed on the same point, both devices worked in automatic modes.
Indoors photos don't look as presentable, especially in the absence of additional light sources.

Let's move on to comparing photos. We just give them without any special comments, I think everyone will be able to see everything on their own and evaluate the quality in both cases. But preliminary curious information. We did a little research in which we handed out photos (showing the image, both on the screen and printed pictures) taken by the K750 and N90 in a group of 20 people, but did not sign them. Macro shots were not included in this test, with the N90 having a clear advantage. All test participants listened to a brief overview of the main characteristics of the devices.
The results of the survey showed that 60 percent of those surveyed are inclined to believe that the quality of the pictures of the K750 is better. We asked them to caption the photographs, to try to guess which machine took these pictures. Interestingly, 70 percent of those surveyed pointed to the Nokia N90 for the most interesting shots.
The second group with the same number of participants had a similar task, but the pictures were originally captioned. An interesting effect was also observed here, up to 80 percent of those surveyed chose pictures from the N90 as the best. The choice was largely based on the brand of the manufacturer, to a lesser extent the quality of the print. Our experience shows that our choice, whether we like it or not, is influenced not only by objective information, but also by the image of the manufacturer, formed on the market through advertising and marketing.
Actually, the photos themselves, please pay attention to the details of the background, in particular the signs. In the case of the K750i you can distinguish individual characters, for the N90 they merge. The conclusion is that the elaboration of individual details on the N90 is implemented somewhat worse, especially for panoramic views, long-range plans.

In macro mode, both devices show comparable images at distances of about 4 centimeters. At shorter distances, Nokia N90 wins and it is undeniable. Remember that in the case of the K750, the mode must be activated from the menu, on the N90 this is not necessary.

It remains to talk about the possibilities of video on the phone. The recording takes place in MPEG4 format, the maximum resolution is 352x288 pixels. By the release of the commercial sample, the quality has been noticeably improved: the image is no longer torn, the video plays smoothly. Here are examples of videos that the prototype recorded:
The 2-megapixel camera capabilities of the Nokia N90 are not bad, the image quality is one of the best on the market, and there are no more models here. In a direct quality comparison with the Sony Ericsson K750, we see the best image detail in the latest device, but worse performance at ultra-short distances. The presence of Carl Zeiss glass optics is more of a marketing ploy than a necessity. In my opinion, optics do not dramatically improve the quality of images.
The transition to a new interface with clear icons, quick switching modes is a noticeable step forward, especially against the background of previous devices.
One of the features worth mentioning separately is XpressPrint. Bluetooth printing is available for printers that support the Basic Print Profile (BPP). The photo can be sent to the printer directly from the phone, it will be printed in a matter of moments. Using a USB connection, you can print from your phone to printers that support the PictBridge standard. The quality of the prints is not bad, for a 10x15 cm image it is quite acceptable for home photos. By the way, unlike the PC screen, the printed pictures from the K750 and N90 do not have much difference. Let me remind you that even blurry photos on the N90 screen look great, this is achieved at the expense of screen resolution.
As the first representatives of models with a 2-megapixel camera, Sony Ericsson K750 and Nokia N90 arouse close interest, and most importantly, an attempt to directly compare them. The cameras of these models can be compared, but only cameras. Everything else is fundamentally different, these are products of various price segments and classes. According to its characteristics, such as size, camera capabilities Nokia N90 belongs to the Sony Ericsson S700 class, which was the first device of its kind on the market. Nokia developers borrowed the successful solutions of this model, in particular, the principle of organizing the interface.
Nokia strives to bring new solutions to market as soon as possible, and the N90 model fits this concept. Improving the quality of pictures, which most fans of the brand rely on, did not happen. And why improve quite decent quality, which is practically the maximum today?
