Mobile environment #20. iPhone 6 Impressions

Impressions of the new iPhone 6, what a loyal Android user liked and disliked in the novelty.

Content:

Introduction

We already have several articles on the site dedicated to the new iPhone 6, including thoughts about new products immediately after the presentation by Sergey Kuzmin and Artem Lutfullin, an article about the start of sales by Pavel Krizhepolsky, and even a full review of the iPhone 6. Not to mention about the reviews of iOS 8.0 and iSoft 80, dedicated to innovations in the G8.

An article about ten reasons for disappointment from Sergey Kuzmin is especially popular.

Why such a long introduction? Despite the fact that we have already published a large number of articles on new products, I would still like to share my impressions, they are slightly different from the thoughts of Artyom and Sergey. First of all, I will note that I am a recent user of iOS and the iPhone first appeared in early February. A month later I got rid of it, and at the end of July I decided to give 5s another chance, plus everything, I needed it to prepare iSoft. As in the case of the iMac, the first impressions were rather negative, everything was unusual and uncomfortable, I wrote about this in the first half of 2014.

In July 2014, we decided to resume the iSoft section, for which I again got a new iPhone 5s. Deciding to give the smartphone another chance, I again tried to use it as the main one. What can I say, it was much easier to adapt on the second attempt, so many functions that I was not used to after Android were now known. Plus, for the second time I chose the white version of the smartphone, which looks prettier and is much more practical in terms of soiling. In general, this article is from a user who is familiar with Apple technology, but not as advanced as Sergey Kuzmin, for example. I will try to note all the features that I liked or, conversely, disappointed. And now, without further ado, let's move on to the description of the iPhone 6.

Appearance

Perhaps, there has not been such a significant change in the design of devices since the 3GS update to the iPhone 4. Yes, the design of the iPhone 5 also differed from the 4s, but the similarities were still visible, the “five” simply became higher and changed the glass case to aluminum, otherwise they are very similar to 4s.

The design of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is completely different. The corners of the device have become smoother, the thin glossy edging has disappeared from the ends, the protective glass is now rounded at the edges. Thanks to the rounded edges, the device is more pleasant to hold in the hand, this feature has been used by Samsung for a long time (which is why their smartphones have such a “slick” design).

In the off state (or in pictures with a black background), one gets the feeling that the screen itself goes to the ends. However, this visual deception does not look as impressive as one well-known video blogger describes it. Therefore, when choosing the color of the future iPhone, do not focus on this parameter.

The back cover is still made of aluminum, but judging by the tactile sensations, it has become smoother. Personally, I don't really like it, in 5s the feeling of a cool thing in an aluminum case was stronger.

The stripes and bezels at the bottom and top edges of the screen protrude only slightly (less than 1 mm), you can only feel this if you deliberately slide your finger along the back of the smartphone.

As for the protruding eye of the main camera, this is, of course, a step back in comparison with 5s, but the significance of this problem is clearly exaggerated. The peephole protrudes literally by 0.5 mm, this does not prevent the smartphone from lying steadily on the table. And if you put it in a case, then the problem is completely leveled.

Buttons have gone from round to elongated and oval (we have also seen this in many Android smartphones and tablets), although it does not look as impressive, but much more practical. As for moving the power key to the right end, I am for such a solution, since I have long been accustomed to it again on Android smartphones. Although for those who will switch to the “six” from 5s, this may seem like a problem. By the way, on 5s my power button dangled (on both samples): if you shake the device slightly, you will hear how it walks in the groove. The iPhone 6 does not have this problem.

The bullseye on the back cover has also changed a bit, if on 5s you felt it was flush with the rest of the back when you swipe it, then in iPhone 6 it seems to be pressed in a little.

If you compare the design of the iPhone 6 with the iPhone 5s, you can see that it has become more practical. Yes, 5s looks more spectacular, but look what they did in the "six" to make it more convenient for users:

  • Rounded edges to make the device more comfortable to hold.
  • Increased the size of the volume rocker.
  • The power key has been moved to the right side for easier access.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the "six" are due to the increased diagonal of the screen. Is it now convenient to use the device with one hand? Definitely not: so, my thumb does not reach about 30% of the screen area.

I know that many users scolded the "six" for the large frames on the sides of the screen: they could make them smaller and reduce the overall size of the device. Well, let's compare the iPhone 6 with modern flagships on Android and appreciate the difference.

Samsung Galaxy S5 < td>145 < td>5.46 td>

Screen Diagonal (inch) Height (mm) Width (mm) Thickness (mm) Weight (grams)
Apple iPhone 6 4,7 138, 1 67 6.9 129
Apple iPhone 5s 4 123.8 58.6 7.6 112
5.1 142 72.5 8.1
Sony Xperia Z3 5.2 146.5 72 7.3 152
HTC One M8 5 146, 4 70.6 9.35 160
LG G3 146.3 74.6 8.9 149
Google Nexus 5 4.95 137.84 69.17 8.59130

Judging by the above table, we can say that the iPhone 6 has typical dimensions for its diagonal. I agree that it could have been made a little narrower, but it's not as critical as some suggest. But in terms of weight and thickness, I have no complaints - this is one of the thinnest and lightest smartphones in its category, and even in a case it will not look bulky.

Screen

First, let's take a quick look at the characteristics of the display:

Characteristic Value
Screen Diagonal 4.7 inches
Display resolution 1334x750 dots
PPI value 326
Matrix type IPS
Protective coating Glass
Oleophobic coating Present
Auto brightness control Present
Multitouch support Present, up to ten simultaneous touches

Let's start with the unusual resolution, which comes from the desire to maintain backward compatibility with older apps made for the iPhone 5s. Thanks to this, you can use iPhone 6 with all the programs that are not yet optimized for this resolution. However, these apps will have a larger keyboard and slightly smudged fonts. For example, this is how it looks like on the example of Tweetbot and Gmail.

If the application is optimized for the new resolution, then the keyboard will visually be the same size as on the iPhone 5s, and more information will fit on the screen.

As for the quality of the screen itself, I can note an increase in maximum brightness and a more natural display of white. I was surprised to find that my iPhone 5s is going yellow, funny that in normal use you hardly notice it.

The dots per inch density has remained the same, and in my opinion, this is correct. Increasing the resolution would have a negative impact on power consumption, and one of the significant advantages would be only a clearer display of small fonts (sixth size, for example).

With the behavior in the sun, everything was fine even with the iPhone 5s, the "six" in this regard is also at its best, subjectively the display of information has become better. I apologize in advance for the dust particles on the screens, the sun came out for just a couple of minutes.

Now a little bit about increasing the diagonal and my impressions of it. If you remember, in my article about the iPhone 5s, I wrote that it is very inconvenient for me to enter text on it because of the small width. The thumbs literally tangled, and the number of typos increased (although the autocorrect did its best!). This problem is completely solved in iPhone 6. I finally begin to understand why other users love this keyboard so much: convenient autocorrect, etc.

We already have a detailed review of iOS 8, so in this article I will only highlight a couple of innovations that I liked the most.

Firstly, this is the ability to install third-party keyboards. And although the same Swype has not yet acquired support for the Russian language, I think that its appearance is just a matter of time.

Second, the Health app. I really like the idea of collecting all the data from various sports trackers in one program, it's convenient and you are not tied to any one bracelet.

And thirdly, the ability to make and receive voice calls and SMS from your Mac is really cool, I wish they would add a similar feature for WhatsApp.

Performance

I'm not going to describe in detail the new processors and how much faster they have become, I'll just note that the speed of the iPhone 6 is at the level of the same 5s, that is, there are no problems. Of course, all performance toys will be optimized for this smartphone and its new chipset. Some of our readers have asked me to publish test results in popular benchmarks, you can check them out below.

I am not an audiophile, so this section will be kept as short as possible. Compared to the iPhone 5s in the "six" more emphasis is placed on bass. Many readers joke that this is due to the acquisition of Beats. Otherwise, I didn’t notice any special changes, except that the maximum volume level became a little higher.

Camera

Apple decided not to participate in the race of resolutions of the main camera and left the same 8 MP. The iPhone has one important feature that I really like: even if you don’t know how to take pictures at all, for a successful shot, you just need to point the camera at the object and press one button. No settings, no twists.

< img src="https://mobile-review.com/articles/2014/image/mobile-wednesday-20/photo/low/photo9.jpg"/>

But for those who want to get more, there is an opportunity to manually adjust the exposure value, as well as more detailed editing of ready-made photos.

Offline work

After 5 days of use, you can’t draw significant conclusions on battery life, but I can say one thing for sure: the new iPhone 6 is perfectly capable of working all day without recharging, which the 5s could not boast of, and this is the main thing. Yes, I would like to have a more capacious battery, but what is not there is not.

Disadvantages

An experienced reader will notice that the smartphone in the article is described painfully rosy, and the author has not yet indicated any special shortcomings. Well, let's go through them in this separate paragraph.

Firstly, the iPhone 6 can no longer be used with one hand. Yes, Apple has added a Reachability feature, but it doesn't solve the thumb typing issue. It doesn't matter to me, I prefer to use both hands for typing messages.

Secondly, the design of the model does not look as impressive as that of the same 5s, although it is a little more convenient to hold the device.

Third, at the moment, only a small number of applications are optimized for the new resolution, because of this, you will not be able to fully enjoy the excellent screen of the iPhone 6: the picture and fonts will look a little blurry.

Fourthly, the amount of RAM is only 1 GB, which, you see, is not enough for the flagship of 2014, even if we are talking about the flagship on iOS.

The bulging eye of the camera could be built into the body.

The company should have removed the 16 GB version from sale and lowered the price of the 32 GB version.

And updates for iOS 8 need to be carefully checked before release.

I will not say anything about bendable iPhones, you can bend any phone if you wish, and carrying a smartphone in your back pocket is basically a bad idea.

Conclusion

I didn't actively use Apple products during the life of Steve Jobs, so for me, words about magic and something like that are an empty phrase. Also, I cannot judge whether this “Apple magic” has disappeared or remains, so I apologize in advance if my conclusions differ from yours.

When using the iPhone 5s, I lacked exactly two things: a larger diagonal of the screen and support for swipe input. In the new iPhone 6, the company solved both of my problems and added to them the excellent Continuity feature and the ability to quickly mark new messages as read. Of the non-critical shortcomings, only the inability to upload my photos to the cloud in the background with the same Dropbox remained. Is the iPhone 6 a good 5s upgrade for me? Yes, of course, and all because the company solved all my problems associated with the previous model. But is it a good smartphone for you? It all depends on what you didn't like about the same 5s. If you were expecting super thin bezels, 3 GB of RAM and a 4000 mAh battery at a price of 20,000 rubles, then most likely you will be disappointed.

I would like to end this article with the following words (some of you have already read them on my twitter): yes, the iPhone 6 could be better, but TouchWiz could not slow down, HTC One M8 had a normal camera resolution, and Nokia - release smartphones on Android (or even their own Nexus!), but the reality is significantly different from what potential buyers want or do not want. Therefore, you will either have to put up with it, or choose a smartphone from another company, fortunately, there are no problems with this now, Android devices have already caught up, and in some ways they have completely overtaken iOS.

If you still decide to purchase the iPhone 6, then take your time, wait a month or two until most developers update their applications to the new resolution, and Apple will work on fixing minor bugs and shortcomings in the new iOS8.

Yes, the design of the iPhone 5 also differed from the 4s, but the similarities were still traced, the “five” just got taller and changed the glass case to aluminum, otherwise they are very similar to 4s.

Screen Diagonal (inch) Height (mm) Width (mm) Thickness (mm) Weight (grams) Apple iPhone 6 4.7 138.1 67 6.9 129 Apple iPhone 5s 4 123.8 58.6 7, 6 112 Samsung Galaxy S5 5.1 142 72.5 8.1 145 Sony Xperia Z3 5.2 146.5 72 7.3 152 HTC One M8 5 146.4 70.6 9.35 160 LG G3 5.46 146 .3 74.6 8.9 149 Google Nexus 5 4.95 137.84 69.17 8.59 130

Characteristic Value Screen diagonal 4.7 inches Display resolution 1334x750 pixels PPI value 326 Matrix type IPS Protective coating Glass Oleophobic coating Yes Automatic brightness control Yes Multi-touch support Yes, up to ten simultaneous touches

Let's start with the unusual resolution, which comes from the desire to maintain backward compatibility with older apps made for the iPhone 5s.
